Visiting Cresco
Howard County IA

History

A late comer in development, but aptly named, Cresco, translated from Latin, means "I Grow." Cresco did grow, right from the start. In April of 1866, it was only a plot of ground that existed as a plan in a man's mind. But, by fall it had grown to be a village and soon became the most important town in Howard county.

Norman Borlaug

Norman Borlaug is credited with saving millions of people from starvation and the founder of the Green Revolution. Borlaug, who grew up on a farm near Cresco, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in agriculture.

Veteran Memorial & Admirals

Cresco is very proud of its veterans, those brave men and women who sacrificed so much for our country so that we might live in peace today. Cresco is a community that has provided more than its share of men and women who have served our country in the Armed Services, and a monument to our veterans has been erected in the Courthouse Square.

Ellen (Marshall) Church

Humanitarian, war heroine, and aviation pioneer, Ellen Church dedicated her indomitable spirit to the service of mankind. As the world's first airline stewardess, she created a new and exciting profession for young girls of the twentieth century.

Historic Kellow House

The Kellow House, home of the Howard County Historical Museum, was built in 1880 by William Kellow Jr. and acquired by the Historical Society in 1969. The Kellow House is listed in the National Registry for Historic Preservation.

Historic Log Cabin

Currently Located in Beadle Park, this cabin was continuously occupied from 1854 to 1964, one-half miles west of Ridgeway. The cabin is original throughout, with the exception of a new roof and a floor downstairs. The cabin is available for tours by calling the Chamber at 563.547.3434.

Heritage Train

Admired and photographed by visitors, this uniquely restored 101A/Model FP7 diesel electronic locomotive serves as a reminder of our community's founding based on local rail service. Built in LaGrange, Illinois, in 1951, it was the first model ever sold to the Milwaukee Road railroad line. The train is available for tours by calling the Chamber at 563.547.3434.
